Fallopian Tubes
These are a pair of narrow ducts in a woman's abdomen which transport eggs from the ovaries to the uterus. When an ovary releases a mature egg, the nearest Fallopian tube opens and draws it in.

Febrile Convulsions
Spontaneous contractions and relaxations of the muscles brought about by a high temperature. These are more common in newborn - six year olds.

Fetal Distress
Signs of fetal distress - including slowed heartbeat or absence of fetal movement - are watched for throughout labour. If a fetus's life is believed to be in danger, usually because of lack of oxygen, the immediate delivery of the baby is called for.

Female Genital Mutilation (FMG)
A procedure carried out in a few small areas of Africa and the Middle East in which the female genitals are drastically modified by removal of the whole clitoris together with the inner and outer labia. It is often followed by infibulation, sewing together of the cut surfaces. The sole purpose of this activity is to prevent sexual pleasure in women.

Fetus
The unborn child in the womb during the later part of pregnancy.

Folic Acid
A B-complex vitamin which is essential for creating new blood cells, folic acid has been shown to reduce the incidence of neural tube defects such as spina bifida (incomplete closure of the spine) and anencephaly (partially or completely missing brain). It is recommended that all women trying to conceive should take a supplement of folic acid; good natural sources include liver, beans, and leafy green vegetables.

Formula
Milk formulated for newborn babies either as a top-up to the breast milk or replacement.

Full-term
A baby is full term when the mother has carried for 38 weeks - 42 weeks.
