Paramedic
A highly trained medical professional who transports the patient to the hospital in an emergency.

Pelvic floor exercises
These exercises and movements simulate starting and stopping the flow of urine, and strengthen the pelvic floor.

Pethidine
Pain-relieving drug which is related to morphine and used during labour. It is usually given as an injection into the thigh. It can cause drowsiness, dizziness and nausea.

Playgroup
A group of babies or toddlers, usually gathered together by parents, to develop social skills and reduce stranger and separation anxieties. Activities may range from free play to organised games and songs.

Postnatal depression
A condition more serious than the baby blues (which many women experience in the first few days after delivery). Postnatal depression is characterised by sadness, impatience, restlessness, and an inability to care for the baby. Call your doctor if the depression does not appear to be lifting.

Pre-eclampsia
Pre-eclampsia is a condition characterized by high blood pressure and protein in the urine after the 20th week of pregnancy. A serious condition if left untreated, preeclampsia can lead to complications or death in the mother or baby.

Pregnancy test
A test of a woman's blood or urine to determine whether she's pregnant. Over-the-counter tests, which can be used at home about the time of amissed period, are very accurate.

Premature baby
Born before 38 weeks of gestation.
